Artist Sherab “Shey” Khandro will present new work at the opening reception of CHI: Art as a Healing Medium, Friday, May 4, 2012, 5-8 pm, at the Goldenstein Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. The month long show will also feature a free talk by Sherab Khandro, entitled, “"Sacred Art, Sacred Space", Friday, May 11, 2012, at 6:30 pm.
Sherab “Shey” Khandro is a neo-impressionist pointillist painter, sculptor, writer, and inspirational speaker, among the early Western artists to be formally trained by masters of traditional sacred Tibetan art. Having spent 15 years as an ordained Buddhist nun, and taking the vow of Bodhisattva, to return lifetime after lifetime to work until the suffering of every being has ended, Shey uses her artwork as an expression of this commitment. Each of the million dots purposefully placed on her canvases is a jeweled universe unto itself, a prayer of compassion for all, bestowing blessings on all who view her work. Blending ancient tradition with contemporary technique, Sherab’s sacred art is an offering of peace to the world.
Shey has held the position of sacred artistic director at Tibetan Buddhist centers in Arizona and Maryland. She also served as artistic director during the construction of the Buddha Amitabha stupa (a Buddhist architectural monument) in Sedona, Arizona, where she makes her home. Her work is collected internationally and has been show in galleries throughout the Southwest. She is an artist in residence at the Goldenstein Gallery, where she may be seen painting with regularity.
Sherab’s May 11th presentation, “Sacred Art, Sacred Space”, will explore that which we hold sacred, what are we devoted to? Not in a religious sense, but the essence of what our lives are about and who we are committed to being. In a world that is busy, demanding, stimulating of mind and body, how do we hold our center, living a life that is fulfilling and authentic? These are questions which have been posed by sages throughout time. Gathering the tools which will support us on this amazing journey that is our life, we will talk about anchoring our spiritual practice in the everyday moments: sacred art, sacred space, sacred mind.
In addition to Shey’s artwork, that of several other artists will be included in the CHI: Art as a Healing Medium show, including that of Alok Hsu Kwang-han, Raylene Abbott, Mary Fisher and LauRha Frankfort, all of whom create healing art in various mediums. The public is invited to meet these and other local artists at the May 4th opening night reception, which occurs as part of the Sedona Gallery Association’s 1st Friday Gallery Tour. Live music will be provided by local musicians Frost and Frost, and complimentary refreshments will be provided.
